First motor race meeting at Goodwood

18 September 1948

The 9th Duke of Richmond, Freddie March, opened the Goodwood Motor Circuit on the perimeter track of the former RAF Westhampnett. The first race meeting, organised by the Junior Car Club, established Goodwood as a major venue in British motorsport. The 2.4-mile circuit would host some of the greatest drivers and most dramatic races of the following two decades.
