Stane Street
Street guide, Goodwood
The modern road follows the approximate line of the Roman road that connected Noviomagus Reginorum (Chichester) to Londinium (London). The Roman Stane Street crossed the South Downs on a remarkably straight alignment, and traces of the original road can still be identified in the landscape. Near Westhampnett, the modern road departs from the Roman line, but the name preserves the ancient connection.
