RAF Westhampnett established as a fighter station

1940

The airfield at Westhampnett was established as a satellite station for RAF Tangmere during the Battle of Britain. Fighter squadrons flew from the grass runways to intercept Luftwaffe bomber formations over the English Channel and the Sussex coast. The airfield played a significant role in the defence of southern England during 1940 and 1941.
