Battle of Britain operations from Westhampnett

1940

Pilots from 145 Squadron and 602 Squadron flew Hurricanes and Spitfires from RAF Westhampnett during the Battle of Britain. The airfield's proximity to the coast allowed rapid interception of incoming German aircraft, and the pilots who served here made a significant contribution to the defence of the south coast. Several pilots were killed in action, and their sacrifice is commemorated in the local churches.
