Horse racing begins at Goodwood

1802

The 3rd Duke of Richmond established a racecourse on the South Downs above Goodwood House. The first meetings were private affairs for the Duke's guests, but the quality of the turf, the beauty of the setting and the calibre of the horses quickly attracted wider interest. The racecourse would grow to become one of the most celebrated flat racing venues in Britain.
