Goodwood Home Farm
One of the largest organic farms in England on the Goodwood estate
Goodwood Home Farm is one of the largest lowland organic farms in England and a cornerstone of the Goodwood estate's identity. Spanning approximately 12,000 acres across the South Downs, the farm produces beef, lamb, pork, dairy, poultry and arable crops using organic methods that have been developed and refined since the estate began its conversion to organic farming in 2001.
The decision to convert to organic was driven by the current Duke of Richmond's conviction that sustainable farming practices are both ethically right and commercially viable. The conversion was a significant undertaking, requiring changes to livestock management, crop rotation, soil management and pest control that affected every aspect of the farm's operation. The transition period, during which the land was farmed organically but could not yet be certified, required patience and investment.
The livestock at Goodwood Home Farm includes rare and traditional breeds chosen for their suitability to the estate's landscape and climate. Sussex cattle, a breed native to the county, graze the downland pastures alongside South Down sheep, whose ancestors were the animals that created the close-cropped turf for which the Downs are famous. Gloucestershire Old Spots and Tamworth pigs are reared outdoors, and poultry is kept in free-range systems that allow the birds access to pasture.
The arable operation produces wheat, barley, oats and other crops in rotation with grass leys that restore soil fertility. The organic approach relies on natural soil biology, nitrogen-fixing legumes and mechanical weed control rather than synthetic fertilisers and herbicides. The result is a farming system that supports a higher level of biodiversity than conventional arable farming, with wildflower margins, beetle banks and hedgerows providing habitat for insects, birds and small mammals.
The farm's produce is sold through several channels. The Goodwood Farm Shop, located on the estate, sells meat, dairy products, eggs and seasonal vegetables directly to the public. The shop is popular with local residents and visitors to the estate, and it provides a direct connection between the farm and the consumer. The estate's restaurants, including The Kennels and the Goodwood Hotel, use Home Farm produce extensively, and the catering at major events draws on the farm's output wherever possible.
The educational role of the farm is significant. School visits, farm tours and open days provide opportunities for children and adults to learn about organic farming, food production and the relationship between agriculture and the landscape. The farm demonstrates that large-scale organic production can be economically sustainable, and it serves as a model for other estates and farms considering the transition to organic methods.
Goodwood Home Farm is not a museum piece or a hobby farm. It is a working commercial operation that produces food to a high standard while maintaining and improving the landscape of the South Downs. The integration of the farm with the estate's other activities, from the food served in its restaurants to the landscape that provides the setting for its events, makes it a central part of what Goodwood means.
The farm's contribution to the Goodwood estate extends beyond food production. The organic management of the land supports the landscape quality that makes the estate's events so distinctive. The downland turf, the hedgerows, the wildflower margins and the woodland that visitors see from the racecourse, the motor circuit and the golf courses are all maintained as part of the farm's integrated land management approach. The farm is not separate from the sporting estate; it is the foundation on which the sporting estate stands.
