Glorious Goodwood, now officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival, is one of the highlights of the British flat racing season. Held over five days in late July or early August, it occupies the final major slot in the summer calendar before the sport's attention turns to the autumn campaigns. The meeting at Goodwood Racecourse, perched on the South Downs above the estate, has been a fixture of the racing year since 1802 and draws crowds that combine serious racing enthusiasts with the social racegoers who regard it as one of the events of the summer.
The racecourse's setting is its most distinctive feature. At approximately 700 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views across the coastal plain to Chichester, the Solent and the Isle of Wight. On a clear summer's day, there is no more beautiful racecourse in Britain, and arguably none in the world. The downland turf, cropped by centuries of grazing, provides a racing surface that is fast and true, and the undulating layout of the course, with its testing cambers and gradients, produces racing that rewards tactical intelligence as much as raw speed.
The Qatar Goodwood Festival features racing at the highest level. The Sussex Stakes, a Group 1 mile race run on the Wednesday, regularly attracts the best milers in training and has been won by champions including Frankel, Baaeed and Palace Pier. The Goodwood Cup, a two-mile staying race, is the centrepiece of the Tuesday card and forms part of the Stayers' Triple Crown alongside the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the Doncaster Cup. The Nassau Stakes, a Group 1 race for fillies and mares, has produced some of the finest performances seen at the course.
The Stewards' Cup, run on the Saturday, is one of the great betting races of the year. A handicap sprint over six furlongs, it typically attracts a full field of twenty-eight runners and produces frenetic, unpredictable racing that defies form analysis. The Stewards' Cup is the punters' race, and the betting ring on Saturday afternoon is one of the great spectacles of the flat season.
The social atmosphere at Glorious Goodwood is relaxed compared with Royal Ascot but retains a sense of occasion. There is no formal dress code in most enclosures, though the Richmond Enclosure has guidelines that encourage smart attire. The mood is summer-holiday rather than formal-occasion, with picnics on the Downs, champagne in the sunshine and an air of celebration that reflects the meeting's position at the height of summer.
Racing at Goodwood is not straightforward. The course's undulations, its sharp bends and the effect of the prevailing wind all influence the outcome of races. The draw, which determines a horse's starting position, is particularly significant in sprint races, where the stands-side or far-side rail can confer a decisive advantage depending on the ground conditions. Experienced Goodwood observers study the draw bias carefully, and it is a frequent topic of discussion among racegoers and commentators.
The Qatar Goodwood Festival generates substantial economic activity for Chichester and the surrounding area. Hotels are fully booked, restaurants are packed and the town takes on a festive atmosphere during race week. The meeting is a major employer of temporary staff, from catering and hospitality workers to parking attendants and security personnel. For many businesses in the Chichester area, race week is the most profitable of the year.
