The Trundle and Downs
Open chalk downland and ancient hillforts with panoramic views and nationally important grassland habitats
The Trundle and the surrounding South Downs form the dramatic natural backdrop to the Goodwood estate. The Trundle, an Iron Age hillfort and Neolithic causewayed enclosure on the summit of St Roche's Hill, is the most prominent archaeological site in the area and provides panoramic views from the Isle of Wight to Beachy Head. The downland around the Trundle is chalk grassland rich in wildflowers and butterflies, maintained by centuries of sheep grazing. The South Downs Way national trail crosses the high ground above Goodwood, connecting Winchester to Eastbourne along the crest of the Downs. The beech hangers on the escarpment, the ancient yew forest at Kingley Vale and the open chalk ridges provide some of the finest walking, cycling and horse riding in southern England.
